POSITION DETAILS
JOB PURPOSE
Provides guidance and counseling (social, academic, college and financial aid).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assumes the responsibility for individual and group counseling activities and for the maintenance of program files.
Assumes the responsibility for maintaining accurate and confidential records of all participants’ contacts and records progress toward matriculation.
Interviews and selects students for participation in the program and the development of cultural activities.
Completes evaluation of academic, personal, and career needs of participants in the program.
Completes Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for assigned students.
Participates in in-serving training, staff development workshops, and departmental meetings.
Prepares monthly reports detailing accomplishments, problems encountered, projections, etc.
Other duties assigned by the Project Director.

QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of one year working in an educational setting teaching, advising, and/or tutoring students from diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds is required.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Preference will be given to individuals that have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project’s targeted population.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, social sciences, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university is required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Master’s degree is preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Knowledgeable of high school graduation requirements and college admission and financial aid requirements and processes. Ability to supervise work-study students and coordinate schedules, as needed. Computer skills include word processing and database applications. Ability to work independently to organize, set priorities, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Effective presentation skills. Ability to establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with school staff, agency representatives, community members, and participants. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred. Case management or student services experience is strongly preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work-related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers, and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development are required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
